Some Light Undergroun’

Written by Lisa Martens

A staged reading presentation by Theatre Incarnate

The 2120’s Oil and Water Wars have swept the prairies. Rayann’s surrogate family lives outside the law in the close quarters of a fortified basement in Winnipeg’s North End. Surviving under the Corporate Government’s radar, these peaceable urban insurgents struggle through the details of love, friendship and discipline without transforming the pressures they face into internal violence.

She now works in Winnipeg with recent newcomers to Canada. Martens wrote Some Light Undergroun’ to explore themes of peace, violence and community living, and to imagine a possible version of Winnipeg after “peak oil”.
